Presentation to English Language School Board

At the regular monthly meeting of the English Language School Board held November 24, 2015 at Stratford Board Office, Peter Rukavina, President, PEI Home and School Federation made the following remarks in a presentation to the Official Trustee:

Trustee Hood, Superintendent Fleet, Board staff,

Thank you for the opportunity to speak with you this evening on behalf of the PEI Home and School Federation.  We wanted to take a few minutes to update the Board on our current projects and concerns.

Provincial School Lunch Program

This April our members unanimously adopted a resolution calling for the establishment of a Provincial School Lunch Program, under which every student in every school on the Island would be provided with a healthy lunch at no cost.

Meeting with the Finnish Parents League

The education system in Finland has been raised several times in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island in recent sittings, culminating, on November 18, 2014, with the a motion put forward by Hon. Steven Myers, Leader of the Opposition:

WHEREAS the Province of Prince Edward Island is failing to foster a culture of learning which is conducive to the highest standards worldwide;

AND WHEREAS providing Islanders with the opportunity to maximize their potential and accumulate a wide base of knowledge to achieve the upmost set of educational skills is a fundamental function of government;

AND WHEREAS there is great potential to learn significant lessons and policy solutions from a recognized leader in high standards of education skills achievement such as Finland;

Annual General Meeting: April 11, 2015

The P.E.I. Home and School Federation’s 62nd Annual General Meeting & Convention is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel, 8:45 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.

Plans are in place for a meeting with networking, sharing best practices, and new learning initiatives workshops in the afternoon for Home and School delegates.

Any parent, guardian, teacher, administrator or staff person at any PEIHSF member school is invited to the meeting with each member school appointing five (5) individuals to attend as voting delegates. Local Home and Schools are encouraged to pay registration fees, travel and accommodation (if applicable) expenses for their delegates to ensure there are fewer barriers to attending.

Summerside Brainstorming Workshop Rescheduled to February 10

The Summerside  “brainstorming workshops,” where home & school members will gather to identify and discuss important educational issues where PEIHSF can affect change has been delayed due to weather and will now be held Tuesday, February 10, 6:30 p.m., Elm Street Elementary School. No pre-registration is required.

Presentation to English Language School Board School Principals Meeting

At the December meeting of all English Language School Board principals, held at Centre Belle-Alliance in Summerside on Monday, December 1, 2014, I delivered the following presentation on “home-school relations.”

Fifty-seven years ago Mrs. J. Gordon MacDonald contributed a piece to The Guardian, at the request of the PEI Teachers Federation, under the headline “Widening Educational Horizons,” about the importance of what she called “home-school relations.”

She wrote, in part:

Board Meetings

Meetings of the Board of Directors are held every second month during the school year, starting in September. Meetings alternate between Charlottetown and Summerside.

Members of local home and school associations are welcome to attend meetings; if you wish to make a presentation to the board, please contact the office in advance.

It's time to register for Home and School AGM & Conference

 

Local Home and School Associations are asked to register delegates for the P.E.I. Home and School Federation's AGM & Conference to be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014, 8:45 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the Dutch Inn /Howard Johnson Hotel, Cornwall, 100 Trans-Canada Highway, PEI.

Everyone is welcome!  Parents and Teachers  are welcome to attend the AGM with each Home and School Association designating five of its attendees as voting delegates. A registration fee of $30 per person applies which covers meeting materials and the buffet luncheon.

61st Annual Meeting, Saturday, April 12, 2014

              

            The P.E.I. Home and School Federation’s 61st Annual General Meeting & Conference is coming soon, and we extend this invitation to all members right across P.E.I., to join us on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Dutch Inn (Howard Johnson Hotel) , 100 Trans-Canada Highway, North River/Cornwall, 8:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.

            Plans are well underway for a meeting filled with networking, sharing best practices, and learning about new educational initiatives plus featured workshops in the afternoon.  Please extend this invitation to all members, parents and teachers, in your school. Announce at Home & School meetings, on Facebook, Twitter, blogs and websites.

Report from English Language School Board Meeting, September 24, 2013

I attended the regular meeting English Language School Board meeting held September 24, 2013 on behalf of the PEI Home and School Federation, accompanied by Executive Director Shirley Jay. The meeting was held at the Stratford office of the board (monthly meetings alternate between Stratford and Summerside).

The meeting was poorly attended: other than Shirley and I and representatives from Recreation PEI who were presenting to the meeting, no other members of the public attended.

Building the Network Subcommitee Meeting, September 9, 2013

The first meeting of the new Building the Network subcommittee of the PEIHSF board met on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.

In attendance were Peter Rukavina (chair), Shirley Jay (executive director), Margie Donvan, Ricardo Angel and Nicky Hyndman. Shelly Keenan was scheduled to attend, and tried, but technical issues meant she couldn't get in touch with us.

Challenges of Meeting “Virtually”

The plan for our meeting was that three of us (Peter, Shirley and Nicky) would attend in person at the PEIHSF office in Royalty Centre and everyone else would attend “virtually” by Google Hangout. The ended up presenting several challenges:
