Extra mile awards presented to school staff

Classroom teachers, administrators, educational assistants, administration assistants, custodians, school bus drivers and crossing guards are central to every single school community in Prince Edward Island.  Each day, they come to school ready to tackle a job that is critically important, extraordinarily complex, often joyful, and, at times, heartbreaking. These key people partner with parents to help students reach their potential and become the best citizens possible, people who positively impact their communities anywhere in the world.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is celebrated annually during the second week of February in  schools across Canada.  Parents, students and others in our school communities take time to recognize the work of these individuals and the significant contribution that they make to the success of students.

It is our collective responsibility to ensure that the over 18,000 students in PEI’s classrooms receive everything they need to reach their full potential. Our education system can only be as good as what is happening in schools each day. Every member of Prince Edward Island’s society has a part to play in supporting school staff who work to achieve the goal of delivering a quality education.

Two Extra Mile Awards were presented to celebrate 2017 Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week.  Cathy Cairns, administrative assistant, from Englewood School and Gail Finniss, Vice Principal from Greenfield Elementary School received special recognition for going the “extra mile” for students, staff, parents and, indeed, the whole school community.

“Taking a moment to say thank you to teachers for everything that they give in the name of helping students achieve is important. Teaching is an art, a science, and a public service, and I thank all teachers for their relentless efforts.” says Lisa MacDougall, president of the PEI Home and School Federation.
