In times of uncertainty, it is very normal to be preoccupied with the situation, worry about loved ones, experienced disrupted sleep and overthink. Below are some tips from the professionals with the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), to help with some of these normal stress reactions:
- Stick to the facts. The Chief Public Health Officer in Prince Edward Island is presenting daily updates, and a wealth of resources are available to the public at www.princeedwardisland.ca/covid19
- Follow prevention tips to stay healthy. Washing your hands often and properly is the single most effective way to stop the spread of the disease. Avoid hugs and handshakes, and cover your mouth with your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
- Be active. Moving your body is one of the most effective stress reduction strategies. Breathing in fresh air and walking in nature will lower your stress levels.
- Focus on what you can do. Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, drinking water, and safely connecting with others, such as online or over the phone, is an essential part of active coping.
- Avoid the hype. You may want to limit your news and social media consumption during this time.
- Try to keep it in perspective. We live in a country with good health care and a province with close community ties and good neighbours. We will look after one another.
- Seek help from your Employee Assistance Program (EAP). You have access to professional assistance and resources. It is crucial to reach out for help when you feel overwhelmed. If you are unwell, or in quarantine, we can arrange telephone counselling support sessions to accommodate you.
