Interim “Parents as Partners in Education” survey results released

PRESS RELEASE – January 25, 2013–Charlottetown

The initial results from the PEI Home and School Federation’s ‘Parents as Partners in Education’ survey have been released and the response has been remarkable.  Almost 500 surveys have been submitted within the first two weeks of the survey, representing over 700 school-aged children.

“Heads up to parents who live in Western and Eastern PEI, response numbers are low in your area and we need to hear from you,” says Federation President Pam Montgomery.

The majority of the parents who have responded reside in Queens County. Only 20% of respondents are from the Western PEI schools and slightly more in Kings County.  Thus far, there is little response from parents in the Kensington, Kinkora, Three Oaks, Westisle, Bluefield Family, Charlottetown Rural and Souris families of schools.

“Fathers, we need to hear from you!” says Owen Parkhouse, Chair, Parents Engagement Survey committee.  “With 85% of the respondents being female, the Federation encourages fathers to participate in the survey and allow their voices to be heard.  Engaging fathers in their children’s learning is important.”

Parents play a large role in their child’s education and are asked to indicate through the survey how they are supported by partners in PEI’s system. This survey of families within the English public school system asks questions about parents’ perspectives on bullying and harassment among students, instructional time, parent-teacher interviews, volunteering, and involvement of the Home and School Federation in various issues.

Participants completing the survey are offered an opportunity to enter to win one of five weekly cash prize draws.

Results will be publicly reported and used by PEIHSF to develop new initiatives in support of improved parent involvement in education. The online survey can be accessed though the Federation’s website at:  https://peihsf.ca/survey.  Paper copies of the survey are available upon request.  For more information, contact the PEI Home and School Federation office at 620-3186 or 1-800-916-0664.
